I am writing these few notes before leaving for Perth, where hopefully we will have had a productive week.

Most of the community,   including Fr Tony Hunt, managed to get to Scotland, leaving just three Redemptorists in residence at Bishop Eton: Frs Jimmy Smale and Tony Johnson and Brian Russell. Fr John Milcz has been looked after at Christopher Grange and Fr  Barrie O’Toole has spent the week in Ripon with his sister. Unfortunately, Fr Barrie is not well again and we ask you to renew your prayers for him as he awaits the decision of the specialists on what will be the best treatment for him in the coming months.

ASCENSION DAY: The Bishops of England and Wales have restored Ascension Day to the fortieth day after the Resurrection and so it will be celebrated this coming Thursday. So please note the usual Holiday of Obligation times.

FIRST COMMUNIONS: May is going to be a busy month. Over the weekend of Pentecost, May 19/20, we will have our First Communion Masses in Bishop Eton, but at St Mary’s they are experimenting with small groups making their First Communion at weekend Masses right through the month. Please pray for the children and their families that they will be truly blessed and that their joy will enliven both our parishes.

ADOREMUS: As its contribution to the unique event of the Eucharistic Congress in September, Redemptorist Publications have produced a magnificently illustrated booklet, Adoremus Extra. It has 124 pages (including the Freddie Freckles story). Copies are available at £4.75. It would be wonderful if every family had a copy so that we can all deepen our understanding of and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Adoremus Extra will also provide us with a wonderful souvenir of the event.

Next Sunday is World Communications Day, promoting the valuable work done on behalf of the Church by the communications office of the Bishops’ Conference. There will be a retiring collection after all Masses and prayer cards are available in the porch.

Madeleine McCann: Thursday 3 May marked the 11th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance. On Sunday 13 May 6.00pm Mass will be said for the intention of Madeleine and her family as we continue to pray for them.

SVP monthly collection will take place after all Masses today. Thank you for your generosity.

Parish Coffee Morning after the 10.00am Mass today.   Also, the Repository with First Holy Communion gifts and cards. All profits going to Project Zimbabwe.

Wednesday Lunch will take place on 9 May at 12.30pm in the Fisher-More Hall. All welcome.

Project Zimbabwe: Thank you for all the support for the Motown night which raised £724! The next event is the Parish Celebration on Sunday 17 June. Save the date.

The SVP group has organised a Healing Mass at 12 noon on Saturday May 26 at which there will be an opportunity to receive the sacrament of the sick. All are welcome. We are hoping to arrange some light refreshments afterwards in the Fisher-More Hall. Should anyone need transport or know of someone who might want to attend but need transport, please contact Bryan on 07866 307 511.
